Dr Sophie Ann Clifton
BSc (Hons.), MSc, PGCert, DClinPsych, CPsychol
With almost two decades of academic and clinical experience in the field of psychology, at the centre of Sophie’s ethos is therapeutic alliance. With an empathic and non-judgmental approach to others, she believes that building positive, trusting relationships is central to psychological support. She also believes each person and their difficulties, deserves a psychological approach tailored to their own, individualised experiences and preferences.
As such, she takes an eclectic approach to therapy, drawing on multiple psychological theories to build individualised and holistic therapy packages that empower each individual to embark on recovery and achieve their therapeutic goals.
Although specialising in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Sophie also draws on other psychological approaches in assessment and therapy, including: cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), and relational approaches.
Crucially, Sophie also believes joy, fun and laughter to be fantastic remedies for distress, encouraging those she works with to inject this back into their lives! As a practising Buddhist, Sophie also enjoys drawing on relaxation, meditation, imagery and mindfulness techniques in her therapy, where appropriate. Identifying as a homosexual female, she has first-hand experience of difficulties experienced by those belonging to gender diverse and LGBTQ+ communities.
